Safe Haven Revived

On July 11, the Mission church and CITY OF REFUGE celebrated eleven years of Kingdom service under the direction of Pastor Bruce Deel.
In the early days, one of the most dynamic areas of ministry was the Safe Haven program, which began in the basement of the old Mission building on 14th Street. Volunteers would gather to prepare meals for our friends from the street, who would come by bus, van, or on foot to receive provision of food, clothing, showers, and hygiene products. Everyone would sit and fellowship together in a warm, home-like atmosphere. As relationships developed and trust was established, many of our friends accepted Christ and redirected their lives. Many were assisted with recovery program placement or transitional housing opportunities. Safe Haven presented a family environment in which brothers and sisters helped each other any way they could.

Meet Our New Intern
At City of Refuge we are blessed to have a steady flow of great interns from local colleges and universities. Among those is Alejandra Zapata, a senior at Atlanta Christian College. Meet Alejandra!
Name: Alejandra Zapata
Age: 20
College: Atlanta Christian College
Plans for the future: Getting married in December, and after graduating from ACC, I'll be going to UGA to get my masters in Social Work (hopefully).
What brought you to City of Refuge?: I started volunteering once a week last year after hearing about you guys from Seth at school. I enjoyed what I did, and the people I met (both that work here and from the neighborhood). What really stuck with me was the passion you guys had to help this community out and how much you wanted them to really understand the love of Jesus. I wanted to build more of a relationship and get to know the people around here; so I decided to do my internship here. I also figured this experience would prepare me more for the field I'm trying to go into.
What do you enjoy most about the ministry?: As I previously stated, I enjoy the passion this church/ministry demonstrates. A lot of people try to portray the less fortunate/homeless as being a people that are so far out of reach from them when really, we are all the same. God created us all in His image, the least to the greatest, and I feel this ministry really tries to reach out to the least and make them understand that.
